A Guide to the Smartest Dog Breeds
Some pet owners choose from the smartest dog breeds. Choosing from intelligent breeds is favorable to pet owners who are fond of joining dog shows and competitions.
Whatever your reason or purpose in choosing your pet, here is your easy guide to find and choose from the smartest dogs.
Understanding Dog Intelligence
Dogs, like humans, can think, learn, and find solutions to problems. This is what intelligence is. To test or measure this intelligence is what makes it complicated in determining how intelligent or smart dogs are.
The most common metric in measuring and determining the smartness or intelligence of dogs is trainability. This refers to how dogs learn to understand the commands quickly that they immediately obey the same.
Stanley Coren, a neuropsychological expert and author of the best-selling “The Intelligence of Dogs”, came up with a list of the 10 smartest dog breeds based on the following:
Smartest Dog Breeds List
While there are several metrics for the measurement of dog intelligence, some breeds are naturally more intelligent than other breeds. Coren, using his metrics, came up with the list of the top 10 smart dog breeds, as follows:
- instinctive intelligence
- adaptive intelligence
- working, command and obedience intelligence
On the other side of the spectrum, these breeds may require more training (and perhaps patience on the part of the trainor) to learn how to follow commands:
- Border Collie
- German Shepherd
- Golden Retriever
- Doberman Pinscher
- Shetland Sheepdog
- Labrador Retriever
- Australian Cattle Dog
You must remember, though, that choosing a dog based on intelligence alone is not a guarantee that he will be the best pet for you. In addition, not because a pet belongs to the lower end of the spectrum means that he cannot be as smart as the other breeds. This is now your responsibility- to transform your pet as the smartest.
How You Can Boost Intelligence
You have the power and the ability to turn even the dumbest dog into a smart pet. The key is in the training. Give him all the opportunities to develop and improve his IQ.
Always talk to your dog and remind him that he is one smart pet. While dogs will only bark to communicate, he can understand your language. Do you know that your pet can learn up to 250 words? Affirmations will therefore help a lot in motivating your dog to improve his intelligence.
You may also want to get some help from tools and resources designed to stimulate your dog’s intelligence. Examples are puzzles; toys that will make your dog think and solve problems such as those that simulate food dispensers, toys that encourage your pet to seek and find or hunt.
Further, in training your dog to become smarter, always choose to reward him for a job well done rather than to punish him for failing to obey your commands. You may also want to exercise consistency with your commands, instead of passing the blame on to your pet.
With proper training and some love from you, who knows that your dog might just end up as one of the smartest dog breeds?
