After studying architecture for a year at a local university, Melania decided to leave her studies to pursue a full time career as a model. She changed her name to Melania Knauss and left Slovenia to model in Milan and Paris.
An agency owner (who happens to be Donald Trump’s friend) brought her to New York. Continuing, she worked with Vanity Fair, Vogue and the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue.
Melania placed second in the 1992 Jana Magazine “Look of the Year” contest, which took place in the Slovenia capital Ljubljana.
The top three contestants were signed on an international modeling contract.
